Not specifically as it pertains to an individual property because the scenarios leading up to it are all so widely varied; however, here are some things to consider:
Starwood doesn't own most of the properties flagged under its umbrella of brands, which naturally means that these hotels are mostly owned by someone else.
A hotel is a business just like many others. You want to get as much out of your investment as possible, so as your contract comes up for renewal, you may look for other opportunities to do so. This will, naturally, lead to three possible conclusions: 1) keep the status quo, 2) go with another hotelier that makes more sense to you and your business, or 3) do it on your own.
I'm sure that Starwood does what it can to maintain the status quo; however, the ultimate decision is really up to the business owner, isn't it? I mean, Starwood isn't going to bully them or twist their arm until they decide to say "uncle", so the only option is float a counter-offer and see if it flies. If it doesn't, then you just have to cut ties and wish everyone well. After all, it's business, not personal.
