Not necessarily. They still pre-authorize an amount to cover an average or expected amount of incidentals that one "might" consume (movies, mini bar, room service, etc.). This will effectively put a hold on your card for that amount - whatever it may be.

For a 3 night stay at a Westin, they tied up $1200 when my room was $139/night. And this was multiple pre-authorizations - not just one. You can always ask at the front desk what they are putting through and request a change if it's too much.
