Gate open simply means that BA know the departure gate and is just a way of letting you know where it will board from. If you are in the lounge I would suggest you leave the lounge when "Boarding" is written in green.
IMHO the problem with this strategy is if you are pushing the limits on cabin bags (size and number), by the time you amble onto the plane, the overhead bins will be full. A helpful member of the crew will no doubt say "here you are sir! Plenty of space above row 99!"
