You can do that anyway by calling and doing it over the phone. I don't expect any new functionality online to do this anytime soon and if I were willing to pay for an extra seat for comfort I certainly wouldn't consider having to call the 1K desk a barrier to my making that happen!
You'll earn extra RDM's for the additional seat as well (but not extra EQM's).
Every time I do something on the phone, something gets messed up. UA's employees simply don't know UA's processes and rules for anything. If I called, my two seats would end up on different ends of the plane. So no thanks. I will wait for this functionality to be supported on united.com.
