Achieving Gold - Dilemma

So I am at 1350'ish BAEC club points with a May renewal date. I have a trip coming up from getting from CAE to AMS and back.

Now I could achieve this in 2 flights with Delta and put this towards platinum with them or "go for gold" which would take me 3 flights each way and is 3 times more expensive.

I have never really found tier status with BA help me as I tend to book and upgrade (so I never get upgraded again) using points. I only ever travel with them internationally as I am based in the US so dont need lounge access domestically. I love BA but think I may be better staying Silver and reaching top tier with Delta as well.

For those of you in the know, in my circumstance, is there really any point of Gold? Is Silver sufficient for what I am doing?

Many thanks.
