Right, I knew the tickets were nontransferable. I was just wondering if there were two people, each of which happened to want to fly at the time that the other one had a ticket for, if it would be possible to call AA and say "Hey, we want to swap seats". It wouldn't cost AA anything as they have already "sold" the seats.

One other related question: if I end up downgrading to coach because I can't score the Z seat on the 8th, would the FA's care if one of the others in my party wants to switch seats with me before or during the flight?
Before the flight - probably not. In fact, if the other party is the same gender as you, they probably wouldn't even notice.
During the flight - no can do. They don't want the other party pounding down a half dozen free drinks, then staggering back to Y to sleep it off while you come forward to pound down a half dozen free drinks.
