I have never heard of this charge but then you were travelling from LGW. I once had a run-in there with a male agent at the ticket desk over a K class fare and cost.

I have heard of chartered airlines charging for premium seats such as exit rows and bulkheads, but not VS. If it was me, I would have asked to see a supervisor to confirm the charge.
