From the timetable, indeed there is a WN flight leaves 30 min before the next UA flight. 30 min may not be much, you never know 30 min maybe enough to see the dying mother. So what is his excuse not to try for an earlier flight ? Is money more important or his dying mother ? Obviously in this case is money.
