On a recent stay at a Ritz Carlton I left the do not disturb sign up and when the bellman came to get my luggage at checkout he did not knock or ring thw bell. He radioed to the front desk who in turn called my room to alert me to tell me the bellman was outside my room. I answered the door and the bellman told me they are not allowed to ring the bell or knock if the do not disturb sign is up. I was very impressed with that.
Staying at the Island Shangri-La in HK. They did the same thing. We called downstairs for something, and a couple minutes later we got a phone call saying there was someone outside and they were not allowed to ring because the DND was on.
