Fare basis versus booking class?

Have been booking a hefty bit of travel on AA lately, and when I book through my corp system (some kind of Sabre portal) I'll be booking flights that are listed as having a V "fare basis". On AA.com, these seem to be "booking into" O and N, which is obviously frustrating from a plat challenge perspective.

I'm assuming that these will get hit with the 50% deep discount penalty, but wanted to see if I could get any insight/wisdom from the board on which is the true class for elite points purposes.

On a related note, I'm finding that even moderately expensive fares ($500-$700 SFO/DFW) booked less than a couple weeks out often seem to "book into" O. Is that pretty standard?

Thanks.
