I think that even with the copay, 15k miles+$50 is a pretty good deal for an upgrade on an AFS flight since you are not EXP....As many will tell you, AFS transcons are notoriously difficult to score sticker upgrades, even for PLTs and sometimes even EXPs.
What exactly are you talking about? By "AFS transcon" are you refering to the 3-class transcons from JFK to LAX or SFO? Those don't upgrade into A class, unless you are already on a paid business class fare booked into J or D inventory, and if that were the case, we wouldn't be talking about copays or stickers, since neither are applicable in that situation.
