I would guess the goal here is not to artificially force restrictions, but limit the work/time AE agents require to do the work.
Changing dates/flight times does require the ticket to be reissued, we can only revalidate AC tickets.
Your logic could be valid if they prevented routing changes post departure as well, which is not the case. From my understanding it is a *A reward issue, possibly something to do with payment.
Slightly O/T, doesn't UA prevent any type of routing changes once ticket is issued, even if travel hasn't begun?
