I did not realize it, but I was told that once you used part of the Star Alliance award - you can only change the dates of the return; not the routing. I was booked to return from ZRH to YOW via LHR and YUL - I wanted to change it to an earlier date from ZRH to YUL (via LX) and then on to YOW. Fortunately, all worked out.
I was also told that such type of routing changes are allowed for a Aeroplan award involving AC flights only.

Prior to your reward travel, but after your reward ticket has been issued
Before you depart, you’re welcome to change your reward travel with Star Alliance depending on the availability of reward space. To make a change, please call the Aeroplan Contact Centre.
For a fee of CAD $90 per ticket (plus applicable taxes), you can:
Change your flight date or flight number
Change your itinerary
You may need to add more Aeroplan Miles in order to make changes to your reward trip. In such cases, the Aeroplan account holder will need to authorize the redemption of those additional miles.
Other changes may reduce the Aeroplan Miles required. Because we can’t refund those miles, you could cancel your existing reward travel and start the reward reservation process over again. You’ll also have to consider that associated fees will apply and all arrangements depend on reward seat availability.
Name changes are not permitted once the reservation has been made or tickets have been issued.
Once reward travel has begun
Once your travel has commenced, changes to Star Alliance Electronic tickets (E-tickets) are permitted depending on reward availability.
For a fee of CAD $90 per ticket (plus applicable taxes), you may change only your flight date and flight number. Changes to your itinerary, class of service, or carrier are not permitted.
To make a change, please call the Aeroplan Contact Centre. If you wish to review your flight details, visit the Manage Your Rewards page of the web site.
Please Note: Changes are not permitted for Star Alliance paper tickets once travel has commenced. Standby travel is not offered on Star Alliance flight rewards.
