I don't believe that's correct. The operating carrier is the one who gets the revenue from the ticket, not whoever sells the ticket (unless there's a revenue sharing agreement in place like on TATL flights). Why should UA get to keep the fare if AC transports the passenger?
I'm surprised the OP was able to do it in the past without there being some kind of irregular ops.
