Thanks for the suggestions. Stayed pretty much to city centre/old town. Think I tried el Corte (on Constitution square?) but just for an outdoor lunch. Not bad fish and glass of wine for an all-in 189 or about US$8 plus tip. Took a walk through the Market but it looked too touristy for my liking. I'll save my market eating for Santiago. A few more versions of Tennet have left me with a slightly better impression of the style, but still find it too light and far less complex than Malbecs from across the Plata. Did buy a bottle to let rest in my cellar for a year or two, figured for 120 (US$5) couldn't lose!
El Fogon was filled with families and locals, very homey, reminding me of my "regular" stop in Buenos Aires which is La Estancia on Lavalle.
