These rooms are NOT really available (they bump somebody out for a Diamond), therefore I would not expect them to offer a room that is available for the Diamond Guarantee as an award room. Basically that would mean that a Diamond could get an award night at any hotel anytime they wanted.
I know Hilton allows this (if prodded) with their Diamond Force. However SPG does not allow this. Also, SPG award rooms are also subject to whatever "minimum night guarantee" is going on in that hotel at the time of the stay. Just because a paid room is available with an 8 night minimum over Xmas/NYE at Westin Whistler does not mean that an SPG Plat can go and book an award for award for just 2 nights, they MUST book an 8-night award. I would assume that this would be similar to how Hyatt will operate their awards as well.
I am under the impression that no capacity control means exactly that!!
last time I did a spg plat guarantee they gave me the award for that amount of nights available to a plat member
and as your example states a spg plat needs to book 8 nights then yes they would have to take 8 night award
in this case a diamond needs to book 2 nights so I expect a 2 night award.
