Is the only way to secure an upgrade to ask at the airport? I know you can't place yourself on the automatic 72/48 hour upgrade list, but if there is an open U seat at 24 hours, can I check in online and click the "upgrade now" link and upgrade myself like I usually would on an AS ticketed flight where my 48 hour upgrade didn't clear? Or, do I really have to do it at the airport? Has anyone had any luck calling the MVP desk to secure an upgrade within the 24 hour window? Thanks!
First, since sometime last year (May for sure) one has not been able to call the MVP/G desk to get an upgrade within 24 hours (which is the window in which a codeshare AS operated flight can be operated based on my experience)... so that option is out... The 'workaround' that worked for me a year and a half ago on NW was I upgraded during OLCI as you described by clicking the 'upgrade to first class' link above the 'change to an earlier flight' and 'change to a later flight' links.
As to the first part of your statement... IIRC AS does have a low price guarantee... however its for AS operated AS marketed flights, not codeshares. Partners are 'not supposed' to undersell AS (from what I heard at the MVPG Bfast...) but it happens. When it does, your MVP/G benefits become
restricted...
