This is the point - I don't think it's stated anywhere. I only knew about this through reading this forum (but I know it is the case - you can book Row 1 as a Gold and then get moved when your status slips).
I have travelled in Row 1 a couple of times on a 747 during the Gold years and quite enjoyed it but would always book Row 2 if I thought my status might slip before departure to avoid heading for Row 5 and not being able to get back again
