Safety in Sao Paulo

I know that violence can happen anywhere (I live in NY). I want to go to Sao Paulo mostly because I can get double miles and they say the nightlife is good. But my other half is very worried about safety. We have read other posts in Flyertalk about daylight carjackings, being tripped and mugged right outside the Hilton, not safe crossing the street at night, the cars not stopping at red lights at night because of carjacking, etc.

Now we like to go out and party, and go from bar to bar, and can stay out late. Are we crazy? Should we stick to Berlin/Madrid/Barcelona etc. or is Sao Paulo a nice place for about 10 days? I don't want to be paranoid and watch everystep. I want to relax and have a good time. We would stay by Paulista (spelling?) Ave. But the major clubs seem all spread out. What clubs are good what nights, and what about "The Station?'

Any help would be appreciated.
