You really are tough on your bags if you drop'em in the swamp. You certainly know these little household tips but you can try baking soda, vinegar and coffee against smells. Also the powders and liquids against pet urine smell should be able to kill other smells, too.
For dust that's dry the vacuum and a brush is usually the best method, as you say.
If I had to bet, I'd say the reason why you are not supposed to wash them is one or both of what I said. Especially considering their poppy colors.
