two very recent stays
1. March 16th-21st, 5 nights, reward stay, two adults + 5yr old
2. March 30th-April 1st, paid stay, 13F only on business travel
All lounges are closed. The Tower lounge has been converted into meeting space according to one staffer we spoke with. The lounge on the 9th floor of the main building has the windows near the elevator blocked off.
Breakfast coupons are offered to Gold and Diamond. The breakfast in Il Giardino is adequate. No hot food other than toasted things, but reasonable selection of other items. The breakfast coupons can be used at the main restaurant next door, but only if you upgrade to the hot buffet. I didn't try, but was told it would be $10 extra. You must pay full rate and have the front desk make an adjustment when you return unused coupons.
Restaurants: expensive and disappointing. Didn't try Mortons, but did visit Il Giardino and will not return. Service is professional, but the menu options and presentation are both underwhelming. I also tried Madrid - San Juan, the tapas restaurant on the ground floor of the Tower. Food and service were both very good, but the place is very pricey. Two glasses of wine, four tapas, plus tip: $90. Perhaps on my next visit, I will try the Lemon Grass restaurant in the villa area. (Why go back? I'm addicted to HH points and the location is close to my SJU office.)
Room service: we used it twice as a family as my little girl thinks eating in a hotel room is the greatest thing. The menu choices are not that wide, however the quality and speed of delivery exceeded expections. Unforunately various condiments were forgotten on both ocassions necessitating a second call to room service. The Puerto Rican daily special is the best deal on the menu.
Grounds: the beach and multiple pools provide a great variety of lounging and playing areas. Feeding the fish from the pier over the coral is a great activity for a 5yr old. There were lots of other kids around during our family stay, which provided a few minutes of companionship and a break for Mom and Dad.
Upgrades: after much fussing, I finally secured an upgrade on day 2 of the first stay. It is important to note that the Tower has showers only, no bathtubs (important for a 5yr old), so our room choices were limited to the main building. Was upgraded to an executive floor on the second visit.
