I don't think there are guidelines really, I have stayed a few that were quite a distance, 30-40 miles. I would think so long as they have a shuttle and 24hr check-in that it doesn't really matter. Just use common sense and research unknown hotels(if you can) to see how far away their are and what amenities that they offer.
