If you get a Visa card with smart chip, you will have no problem and it will take one second for the operation to be done.
If you have not, it will take more time (not for maintenance issue, but just because of connection time to the international central system) or your card will not be accepted.
Amex are not accepted in RATP (metro) or SNCF (Railways) automats for fraud reasons (but are accepted with ID at SNCF counters)
Amex are accepted at AF coach counter (but not within the bus, where you can pay with cash)
