Thanks for your comments. I'll be trying this at CLE during a normally-busy period in a couple of weeks.
Get your gate pass at the west end of the Continental counter (The sign says "Gate Passes"). Your only problem will be getting someone's attention since they are busy checking bags, etc. No problems once you get it.
