In terms of how it works, I'm guessing from the
passport photo they can scale certain key measurements (see below) and then scale them to a live picture of you. If the two match, gates open:
How do facial biometrics work?

The measurements are digitally coded and this can then be used for comparison and verification purposes. Biometric technology is perfectly safe as facial biometrics can be taken from a good quality passport photo.
