Thanks for input, many good suggestions. While UA or *A not 100% required, it would be nice. Otherwise, I will have to change inbound to China as well and this has to be PVG. The HKG-ICN option is interesting, it will feel like a two-nighter on the plane though. But I'll look into it.
Not sure if you can make the departing flight (according to the Xiamen airport page, the flight leaves at either 1:30 or 2:30 depending on the day of the week), but if you can catch any of the ICN flights, there is a 10:30 pm ICN-LAX flight on Asiana that is easily doable would get you home on the same night.
