I love the Streetwise maps too and was disappointed to learn they didn't have any for Russian cities. In it's place, I sometimes used the
Knopf mapguides, which breaks the city down into districts, each with a separate map and information pertaining to the specific area. They are very detailed, but kind of confusing if you want to look at the whole picture. The street names are in both Cyrillic and Roman, which helped me tremendously.
Otherwise, I used the the free maps provided by the hostels and visitor center, or I referred to the guidebook for certain things listed that were out of the city center.
