Sure - I did exactly this - I changed my return online to a later flight on the same day. I then called up and explained the situation. I was polite but firm, transferred to Customer Services who said they didn't know but would check with e-ticketing. They did this, called back and refunded £136 for the 4 of us. Just keep trying..
