The 2x status miles combined with the 3x redeemable miles promotion running on non-stop flights between BOS-SFO/LAX/SAN is a way for some to make sense of the costs of doing this only on mileage runs. Approximately $237 all-in for a roundtrip would generate 15,000+ redeemable miles and 10,000+ status miles.
