I think that's the point: flying premium classes helps, being *G/SEN/HON helps as well, arguing (sometimes) helps:
For the first and last case it seems that I always get 100 USD for compensation (happened 3x) and the hassle to shop around after arriving from a 13 hour flight...
In the second case - if I don't get anywhere with the local reps - I simply give up and call the central baggage office of of the airline, if necessary indicating my status. They arranged a cash compensation upon check in for the return flight (again 100 USD - happened 2x).
