I didn't say it would be as carry-on luggage with all three pieces. It was a general argument to show the superiority of 2 pole handles over monopoles. So imagine you check the rollerbag. Once you get it back, it will carry two more pieces. And the same handle systems come also with bigger bags that can only be checked anyways. For example, I've been known to travel with a photo equipment bag and a briefcase/messenger bag. The photo bag is my carry-on item. It is smaller than the normal 45 inches. The messenger bag is my personal item. It does stay with me, unless there is a ton of free space. Once I arrive, I pick up my checked luggage. I can then stow everything on one rollerbag and maneuver the entire load with one hand. That is very practical.

If you read my Travelpro Plat5 review, you will notice that one of the reasons I like it so much is that the flat front compartment will fit a light coat. So that's how I use it.

Good explanation. As the unhappy owner of a monopole I truly understand the superiority of duopoles. I rarely carry more than fits in a 19" monopole, which I check, but when traveling with friends who overpack, we just get a cart in the baggage area and slam it all down there.
