The driver suggested that +1 go to an ATM to get "real" money to pay for the ride, and drove to an ATM and pretended to wait while +1 took out money. But then the cab drove off for no apparent reason, and only later in the day did +1 discover that his wallet was missing 500 pesos, and realize that the cab driver had pocketed them during the wallet "inspection," before dumping +1 at the ATM and driving off.
Im very sorry for what happened to your +1 with this crooked taxi driver. However, I think it must be said that its probably not a good idea to let a complete stranger help you inspect your wallet.
Please do not take this the wrong way and I realize your +1 was taken advantage of and that he acted in good faith... but perhaps his actions were those of a rather unexperienced traveler. Only your own fingers and those of people you know & trust should go near your wallet, and IMO this applies not only to Buenos Aires.
I hope you and +1 still had a nice experience in EZE and choose to come back someday.
Cheers,
