I've sat in 1A before, and I enjoy sitting in the nose enough to not mind being a little distant from my companion. If you really want to be near each other, rows 3 and 4 are indeed closer.

I think you should consider the differing answers you're reading in the thread you mention (which is probably where you should have posted) and from the agents to be an indication that there is no single correct answer, and you should evaluate all the evidence people have provided and make your decision. The photos in the 747 thread should be most useful to you.
