stimpy on this. You can get wound up on the insecurity issues. There are parts of London I prefer not to visit at night, even in the centre, and the same goes for parts of many Western cities for that matter. Just be streetwise, don't flaunt jewellery (why would you want to, anyway?) and keep cameras hidden. We had a car but (of course) didn't use it in Sandton.
The new Holiday Inn Sandton is close to where you want to be, as is the InterContinental Sandton. The malls opposite both are open in the evenings with several dining opportunities (not just The Butcher Shop

) though many retail outlets close. IMO, both are better located than the Hilton for that reason, though if you're not venturing out, that won't be a consideration.
