Airport buses are often great in China, even for the typical FT demographic (i.e. can afford taxis, or even hotel cars). In places like BJ or SH, it helps to know which bus lines run closest to your destination (because there are many to chose from), but in second and third tier cities, simply getting on "the bus" is likely to save y100+ in cab fare (I'm thinking of Lanzhou++, Xi'an+, Changsha, Shenyang, Kashi, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, and Qingdao+).
Also, for any SH destination in Jing'an, I have extensive data to back up the fact that the #2 bus (+ taxi) is on par with other options in terms of time,... and costs much less.
