Since your new flight was on a different day than your scheduled flight, this scenario doesn't contradict the OPs observation. I understand the BA issue being queried is in regard to same day flights. If they had loaded you onto an earlier same-day EDI flight than the one you were confirmed on, then the asking nicely and the flashed Gold card might be important factors.
