I disagree with this. First of all, what "Hertz will want," and what Hertz will get are not necessarily the same thing. If I had LDW coverage for a car rental, either through my credit card, or Priceline's supplementary coverage, or Amex Premium Car Rental coverage, I would tell Hertz to deal directly with the insurer. They are certainly accustomed to doing so, and are not going to sue me if they know that they can collect their money faster and cheaper by cooperating with the insurer. Of course, there will be some paperwork that the renter will have to submit to the insurer if a claim is to be paid, but that's also true if you incur a loss on your personal auto.
Second, whether one rents a car one time for 30 days, or 15 times for two days each, the daily cost for purchasing LDW from the rental-car company is the same, and a poor investment if one is otherwise covered.
Note to Teddie2: If you are a U.S. Resident, and do not wish to rely on your personal auto insurance coverage, you might want to look into Amex's Premium Car Rental Protection. For a flat fee of $20 or $25 per rental (not per day) you get $50,000 or $75,000 of primary coverage for loss or damage to the rental car. Of course, all of these types of coverage only pay for loss of, or damage to, the rental car. If you hit another car or injure someone else, you still have to rely on your personal auto policy, unless the damages are less than the minimums provided (in most states) by the car rental company, or you have purchased supplemental liability insurance (SLI) from the rental company.
You are 100% INCORRECT on your first point of what HERTZ wants vs what they get. Read your rental contract! If you have your own coverage, that is between you and your insurer, it has nothing to do with the rental company. In the event of an accident YOU are responsible for damages to HERTZ, not your insurance co. They will charge your credit card for damages and supply you the paperwork for YOU to file a claim and get reimbursed. They are not going to do the work for you, and no RENTAL company does. Now in the case of a total loss or a substanital repair they may WORK with your insurer to speed the process along due the fact that your credit card may MAX out and its quicker than suing you. If you think you will have an accident, toss the keys to HERTZ and say deal with my insurance company or credit card, you are sadly mistaken.
I have personally seen renters wait months to get reimbursed and I can tell you the rental company is not going to wait for YOU to get your money first so you can then pay them.
