My follow-up question is: what is the most affordable (and trustworthy) way to get required insurance for a priceline car rental in US?
If your personal auto insurance policy does not cover rental cars, the cheapest way to obtain such coverage for rentals obtained through a Priceline bid is to get and use a credit card that provides LDW on Priceline "Name Your Own Price" car rentals.

I'm a little surprised at the answer you got from MBNA. Did you speak with one of their insurance services reps, or just a regular credit card customer service rep? If the latter, I would call back and ask to be connected to an insurance rep. The answer you get might be the same, but then again, it might not. If an insurance services rep says that Priceline "bid" car rentals are covered if charged to the MBNA card, I would ask the rep to send you an Email to that effect so that you have it in writing.
