The issue is not that you were upgraded, but that you were upgraded the day of your flight. Had you been a confirmed upgraded before the day of flight, there would be no designation on the manifest and there would be no way for the flight crew to differentiate you from other passengers. Even with last minute upgrades and ML*1 if there are a full complement of meals, flight attendants may still take orders by status.
