As far as I understand UA Fans argument, it is not about being keen on EK and not keen on LY but rather the fear that an alliance with LY makes it more difficult to negotiate/invite arab airlines. So it is just a strategic argument.

I agree with apirchik and understand that it is difficult for LY to "sell" themselves to an alliance.
