The car rental companies didn't all behave like princes; there was some terrible gouging going on. I seem to recall paying $285 or so, all in, to drive a Pontiac Bonneville from Washington DC to Sea-Tac in 45 hours flat (don't worry, I had help

). I just got lucky. As we turned the car in, the guys next to me were being quoted $1,500 to take an Avis car from Seattle down to Pnoenix.
