I've only heard reports on KTUU... and apparently this was done due to the ash, and was subsequently removed yesterday... sounds a little more expensive then deicer fluid... and it sounds like it was a protective plastic sealant.

Here's the quote I was looking for:

Airplanes wrapped in a protective plastic sealant and stationed overnight in Anchorage were unwrapped this morning, inspected and prepared for passenger flights. The plastic sealant protects aircraft from the abrasive ash particles, which pose a significant danger to aircraft engines.
