When I was growing up, mayonnaise was typically the salad dressing of choice. When my mother (rest her Southern soul) served a wedge of iceberg lettuce with a dallop of mayo (and maybe a slice of pineapple), with dinner, I knew I was loved.
As for not being "proper," that characterization is only a pompous platitude. Many other salad dressings are mayo based (or use similar ingredients). If it's tasty, it works. I won't argue the caloric impact, however.
NO! Mayonnaise is not salad dressing. It is not and never has been considered a salad dressing in the south. I have friends that have told me they were given mayonnaise when they could not afford anything else. Bless their heart. I guess the poor used mayonnaise for a lot of things it was not intended for.
For me, I like just about every salad dressing but blue cheese and due to health concerns, I will not eat ranch.
