Personally, I think Hertz is stretching the term "crossover" by calling the xA a crossover because it's basically just a 4 door hatch back. Whatever the case, I'm sure Hertz would have swapped you out for another car if you told them you didn't want the xA.

My opinion - no, it was not an upgrade. In the eyes of Hertz, it was an upgrade.
