What you don't seem to "get" is that, whether you intended or not, you put someone in an uncomfortable situation when you made the request of him or her. I think what you did was unfair because you put the onus on someone else to reject you, which is socially awkward, or to grant your wish to avoid the discomfort.
seriously- same goes with asking another passenger to move. i've been asked to move so families could sit together, but when the request is made (especially ), it's obvious that it's expected to be honored. typically the people doing the asking has all their crap packed up already.
the next time i'm asked, and it's to a worse seat, i'm saying no.
