It's usually done, but AFAIK it's a non-mandatory procedure imposed by the airlines.

I know of one place where it's never done- the Aegean lounge in SKG, from where pax are driven by car (or 'private' bus for the very busy flights) to the plane. BP (and FF card if applicable) check on entry and that's all.
