I flew to EU and only had to clear customs at my last destination despite the fact that both FRA and LJU are within Schengen borders. But I never traveled through US so I don't really know if reverse is the same.
Flying to Europe or most other countries is quite a bit different as they have a lot of international transfers but we do not here in the US so the system is setup a bit different. You have to claim bags and clear immigration and customs upon arrival into the US, no matter what your final destination.
