Marriott Silver members do not get free breakfast based on status. Perhaps he booked the current free breakfast promotion for you.

Elite status does not transfer to anyone other than the member. Prior to Marriott specifically excluding anyone other than the member upon checkin you could sometimes check in without the hotel caring. That is rarely the case anymore.
