You will still need to go through immigration and customs as you will end up in US on domestic flight. However your luggage should be clear all the way to Canada and that is where you will have to pass customs with it (Canadian).
When you say the bags should clear all the way...... I think you mean the bags will be tagged all the way but they will definitely need to claim any checked bags before leaving customs and then recheck them. While I have not arrived internationally at CLT I doubt it is different from any other international arrival in which you just drop your bags on a belt after exiting customs.
So, the OP will go through customs twice on this trip, in the US and Canada and need to claim the bags twice also.
The connection time of 77 minutes will probably be fine for you but your bags......
