Surely check-in at LBA can remove the numbers for that sector alone and print the boarding pass blank for retro credit or add your DC number? I presume by that point you will have already checked in for IAD-SFO so you wouldn't lose your upgrade (and you could double check on arrival at LHR anyway...)
